Funeral services in Virginia are prey to outdated legislation that in many cases can prove expensive to a customer. One such bit of legislation states that consumers may only buy caskets and coffins from licensed Virginia funeral homes. What happens in practice is that a funeral home sells the customers a casket at twice the price that it is available for in the open market. This is a bit of legislation that does not exist in most states. This and other similar legislations ensures that funeral services in Virginia are significantly more expensive than in many other states. Actually, like Texas, Virginia is predominantly a rural state, where the cost of funeral arrangement should be family oriented and quite low. And perhaps changes in legislation will ensure that this happens in the near future. For now, predominantly Christian funeral services are offered by Virginia funeral homes across the state usually by family based funeral homes. Interment is usually in local cemeteries.
